The 7 Best Viewpoints in Lisbon (and When to Visit Each)

Lisbon is built on seven hills, and from almost any of them you'll find a miradouro — a viewpoint — looking out over terracotta rooftops and the Rio Tejo. Some are famous, some are quiet, and the trick is knowing which one to visit and when.

1. Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — for sunrise

The highest viewpoint in the city, with a 180° view of central Lisbon, the castle, and the river. Almost empty at 7 a.m., crowded by 6 p.m.

2. Miradouro da Graça — for the castle

A short walk from Senhora do Monte. Pine trees, a kiosk for coffee, and the best straight-on view of the Castelo de São Jorge.

3. Miradouro de Santa Luzia — for the tile

Covered in azulejo panels, looking over Alfama down to the river. Beautiful at any hour but particularly soft just after sunrise.

4. Miradouro das Portas do Sol — for the Alfama photo

Right next to Santa Luzia and the most photographed angle of Alfama. Go early or stay for golden hour.

5. Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara — for sunset

On the edge of Bairro Alto, facing east toward the castle. Gardens, benches, and a great spot to watch the city light up.

6. Miradouro de Santa Catarina — for the river

Younger crowd, kiosk with drinks, faces the 25 de Abril bridge. Best at golden hour with a glass of wine.

7. Miradouro do Adamastor — for the locals

Same hill as Santa Catarina but quieter. Skaters, musicians, and a slow afternoon vibe.

A note on timing

The best light in Lisbon is the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset. Most tour groups hit the same viewpoints between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. — go just before or just after for the same view with half the people.
