The Best Time to Visit Lisbon: A Month-by-Month Local Guide
When to visit Lisbon for the best weather, fewest crowds, and lowest prices. A local breakdown of every month — sun, rain, festivals, and what to expect.

Lisbon is a year-round city, but each month has its own character. Here's a local's honest breakdown of when to come, what to expect, and what to skip.
Spring (March – May) · Our top recommendation
Mild temperatures (16-22°C), jacaranda trees in full purple bloom by late April, and shoulder-season prices. Easter weekend gets busy, but mid-week in April or May is one of the best windows of the year. Pack layers — mornings are cool, afternoons are warm.
Summer (June – August) · Hot, lively, and crowded
Peak season. Daytime highs hit 30-35°C, the city fills with cruise visitors, and prices for hotels and tours climb. The upside: long evenings, beach trips to Cascais and Costa da Caparica, Santo António festivals in June (sardines, parades, music in Alfama), and outdoor cinemas. If you come in July or August, book everything early and plan indoor or seaside activities for the hottest hours.
Early autumn (September – October) · The local secret
Our personal favorite. Warm sea, fewer crowds, light around 22-26°C, and the vindimas (grape harvest) happening in nearby wine regions. October is mild and quiet — almost a second spring. Most days are sunny well into November.
Late autumn & winter (November – February) · Calm and cheap
Lisbon doesn't really do "cold" — daytime highs stay around 14-17°C — but it can rain. Hotels are cheapest, restaurants are full of locals not tourists, and December lights up beautifully for Christmas. February sees the start of Carnaval. Pack a rain jacket and waterproof shoes.
Festivals worth planning around
- Santo António (12-13 June) — Lisbon's biggest street party, in Alfama - NOS Alive (mid-July) — major music festival - Fado on the streets (varies, summer evenings) — free open-air sets - New Year's Eve at Praça do Comércio — fireworks over the river
Quick verdict
- Best overall: late April, May, September, early October - Best for nightlife and beaches: July - Best for budget: November to February (excluding Christmas week) - Avoid if you can: the first two weeks of August (hottest, most crowded)
